FPGA Engineering Talent in the UK: Defence, Comms and HPC Are Driving Demand

FPGA engineering is a niche within a niche, and one of the most consistently difficult hiring briefs we encounter. The number of engineers with genuine production FPGA development experience in the UK is small relative to the demand from defence primes, communications and semiconductor companies, and the growing number of technology businesses building custom hardware.

The market in 2026:

• VHDL remains the dominant language in UK defence and aerospace FPGA roles; Verilog and SystemVerilog are more common in commercial and semiconductor environments • Xilinx (now AMD) and Intel (Altera) device families dominate (experience with Vivado and Quartus toolchains is near-universally required • High-level synthesis (HLS) is growing in relevance but has not replaced RTL-level skills at the senior end • DO-254 experience (airborne hardware) is exceptionally rare and commands a significant premium

Typical role profiles: • FPGA Design Engineer) RTL design, simulation, implementation • FPGA Verification Engineer (functional verification, UVM, formal methods • FPGA Systems Engineer) architecture, requirements, integration • DSP / Signal Processing Engineer, FFT, filtering, communications algorithms on FPGA
